How to achieve these and other Future ProjectsResearch Centre At present, the DDC has minimal resources to co-ordinate the programmes. Realistically, the DDC will not be able to expand without significant developments in equipment and infrastructure. Ideally, a new research facility independent of the main DDC building will be needed for housing personnel, equipment (e.g. computer software and hardware) and work stations, a boat shed for the research and rescue vessels and a loading facility for launching vessels and managing marine life and equipment.
Research Vessel Currently, the DDC has a 5m Aluminium research vessel proudly sponsored by Cable Sands that is primarily used for weekly research expeditions. This vessel is also available for community projects, festivals, media and sponsor familiarisations, photographers and film makers. Observation Platforms Plans are in place to build viewing platforms and identify natural platforms for the collection of dolphin data along the coastline. These platforms will allow researchers to collect information on natural dolphin behaviours without any risk of disturbance from research vessels. The convenience, stability and accessibility which the platforms will give allows this information to be collected at any time and in all weather including those periods unsuitable for boating. Scientific Expertise Current projects have been designed and conducted by qualified scientific research professionals for the collection of baseline data. The methods of data collection have adopted internationally practiced standards that ensure scientific rigour is maintained. As the projects begin to expand, well established and highly qualified research personnel will be recruited by the DDC research body and their affiliated institutions to establish a credible and well managed research facility. |
